Multifaceted and beautiful Merano Region

The valley basin of Merano is dominated by the Mediterranean influence and astonishes with its many different facets. Its unique mixture of palm trees in front of imposing peaks, the Alpine-Mediterranean atmosphere, the interplay of tradition and modernity, as well as the cultural wealth reflected in imposing castles, palaces and museums make it a fascinating place to visit.

Sightseeing in the Merano region

Numerous castles, palaces and museums immerse you into the history of South Tyrol.

Trauttmansdorff Castle

Be sure not to miss out on Trauttmansdorff Castle and its stunning botanical gardens, which are home to more than 5,000 plant species from all over the world and serve as a real feast for the eyes. The castle is also home to the Touriseum museum, which is dedicated to the exciting history of tourism in South Tyrol. The Austrian Empress Elisabeth once held the castle in high regard and used it for a spa stay.

Tyrol Castle

The Tyrol Castle in Dorf Tirol/Tirolo near Merano was the ancestral castle of the Counts of Tyrol until the 15th century and therefore the cradle of the County of Tyrol. Tyrol Castle today is home to the South Tyrolean Museum of Culture and Provincial History, an attraction well worth seeing.

Merano Castle

The Prince’s Castle was built by Sigmund von Tirol, archduke of Austria, around 1470. The residence, located in the heart of Merano, is one of the best-preserved castles in South Tyrol.

Jugendstil in Merano

The renowned Kurhaus (spa house) and the Stadttheater (municipal theatre), both of which are enchanting with their Jugendstil style (loosely associated to that of art nouveau), are also places worth seeing in Merano. A visit should also be paid to the Wandelhalle, also built in the Jugendstil style, which features numerous paintings that entice visitors to admire.

Merano Arcades

The medieval Merano arcades are also well worth a trip. Visitors can look forward to a wide array of shops, bars and eateries.

Merano City Museum

There are also fascinating things for visitors to discover in the Merano City Museum. Incidentally, you get free admission to around 90 museums with the MeranCard.
